MVHR and ventilation servicing

An MVHR service costs €100 to €300 a year, and new filters €30 to €60. Change the filters every year, inspect them every 6 months, and have the system serviced every 12 to 18 months.

Free, no obligation. One local company prices it, not five.

MVHR and DCV

MVHR (mechanical ventilation with heat recovery) takes stale, damp air out of kitchens and bathrooms and brings fresh air into the living rooms and bedrooms, passing one past the other so the fresh air is warmed. DCV (demand controlled ventilation) extracts air from wet rooms at a rate set by the humidity, with fresh air coming in through wall or window vents. New homes built to the Building Regulations' Part F rules have one or the other, so the house stays airtight and the air stays fresh.

What a service covers

  • New filters, and a check on the heat exchanger.
  • The fans: noise, bearings and speed settings.
  • The condensate drain, cleared.
  • Air flows at each valve, rebalanced if they've drifted.
  • The summer bypass and the controls.
  • For DCV: the extract units and the inlet vents cleaned.

Blocked filters are the most common fault. The fans work harder, the house feels stuffy and condensation comes back.

Questions we get asked

How often should MVHR filters be changed?

Every year, and look at them every 6 months. Houses near roads or building sites need them more often.

How much is an MVHR service?

€100 to €300 a year. Filters on their own are €30 to €60.

Can I turn off my MVHR?

No. It's what keeps an airtight house free of damp and stale air. Turn it down, not off.

Why is my MVHR noisy?

Usually blocked filters making the fans work harder, or a fan bearing wearing out.
