Heat pumps in Laois
Census 2022 counted 31,112 households in Laois. 7% heat with electricity, the group heat pumps are counted in, against 12% nationally: the 23rd highest of the 26 counties. 30% of Laois homes have a renewable energy source, such as a heat pump or solar panels. Oil still heats 45% of Laois homes, the fuel a heat pump most often replaces.
9% of Laois homes were built since 2011, and 843 new homes were finished in 2025, with 611 more from January to September 2026. New homes have to meet Part L's renewable energy rules, which is why so many have a heat pump and mechanical ventilation. Their first warranties end within a few years, and that's when yearly servicing pays for itself.
The Laois climate
Portlaoise gets 2,080 heating degree days a year, the 9th highest of the 26 counties' main towns. That's a colder climate, so a heat pump in Laois runs for more of the year and goes through more defrost cycles. A clean coil and the right pressure matter more here.
Laois is inland, so salt on the coil isn't the problem. Leaves, frost and a blocked condensate tray are.

A heat pump or reversible air con unit on a house is exempted development under Class 2(d) within its limits. On a protected structure, or if your planning permission says otherwise, ask Laois County Council.
