Air conditioning installation

A split air conditioner for one room costs €1,500 to €3,500, fitted. A multi-split for 2 to 4 rooms is €3,500 to €7,000, and a whole house €6,500 to €18,000. A reversible air-to-air system that heats as well can get an SEAI grant of up to €7,500.

Free, no obligation. One local company prices it, not five.

Split, multi-split or ducted

  • Split. One indoor unit and one outdoor unit. The usual choice for a bedroom, an office or a garden room.
  • Multi-split. One outdoor unit feeding 2 to 5 indoor units. Fewer boxes on the wall outside.
  • Ducted. A hidden unit in the attic or ceiling with grilles in each room. Neater and dearer, and easiest to plan into a renovation.
  • Portable. A box with a hose out the window. Cheap, noisy and far less effective. No installation needed.

Most units sold now heat as well as cool. Used for heating, they're air-to-air heat pumps, and that's what the SEAI grant is for.

Grant, planning and F-gas

  • SEAI grant. Up to €7,500 for an air-to-air heat pump, made up of €3,500 for the unit and the €4,000 Renewable Heat Bonus when it replaces oil, gas, solid fuel or electric storage heating. Cooling-only units get nothing. The home must be built and occupied before 2021, the contractor SEAI-registered, and the grant approved before work starts.
  • Planning. An air source heat pump on a house is exempted development under Class 2(d), within limits: no more than 2.5 m² in total, at least 50 cm from any edge of the wall or roof, not over a public road, and no louder than 43 dB(A) (or 5 dB(A) above background) at the nearest neighbour's home. A protected structure, or a condition on your planning permission, can change that.
  • F-gas. Fitting a unit means connecting a refrigerant circuit, so it's work for an F-gas certified engineer. Fixed units can't be fitted DIY.
