F-gas engineers

Anyone who installs, services, repairs, leak-checks or decommissions a heat pump or air conditioner's refrigerant circuit needs an F-gas personnel certificate, and the company they work for needs an F-gas company certificate.

Free, no obligation. One local company prices it, not five.

  • Personnelcertificate for the engineer
  • Companycertificate for the business
  • Leak checkslogged at every service
  • RGIcovers gas boilers, not refrigerant

Who needs a certificate

F-gases are the refrigerants in most heat pumps and air conditioners. Under the EU F-gas rules and the Irish regulations (S.I. No. 658 of 2016), anyone who installs, services, maintains, repairs, decommissions, recovers or leak-checks stationary refrigeration, air conditioning or heat pump equipment must hold a personnel F-gas certificate.

A company or sole trader doing that work for other people must hold an F-gas company certificate. In Ireland, company certificates are issued by F-gas Registration Ltd; personnel training is certified through QQI. A company certificate from another EU country is recognised here.

An RGI registration is for gas boilers and gas appliances. It doesn't cover a heat pump's refrigerant circuit.

Before anyone opens the unit

  • The engineer's F-gas personnel certificate, and the company's F-gas company certificate number.
  • A record of any refrigerant added or removed, and of the leak check.
  • Whether they're approved by your unit's manufacturer, which can matter for the warranty.

Questions we get asked

Do I need an F-gas engineer for a heat pump service?

For the refrigerant leak check and any work on the gas circuit, yes. The water side can be done by a heating engineer.

Can a plumber fit air conditioning?

Only with an F-gas personnel certificate, working for an F-gas certified company. Fitting a split unit means connecting the refrigerant circuit.

What happens if someone without a certificate works on it?

It's an offence under the Irish F-gas regulations, and it can void the manufacturer's warranty.

Is R290 (propane) an F-gas?

No. R290 is a natural refrigerant, but it's flammable, so the engineer still needs the right training for it.
