What usually goes wrong
- Low water pressure. Below about 1 bar on the gauge, the pump can stop and the unit shows a flow error. Often a slow leak, a failed expansion vessel or a pressure relief valve that's let go.
- Low water flow. A blocked magnetic filter, air in the system, a stuck valve or a failed circulating pump. Ecodan shows L9; Daikin Altherma shows 7H.
- Sensors and controls. A failed temperature sensor (thermistor), a control board fault, or settings changed by accident.
- The outdoor unit. Leaves or ice blocking the coil, a blocked condensate tray that freezes, a worn fan bearing that gets noisy.
- Refrigerant. A leak in the gas circuit. The unit loses output and may show a refrigerant shortage code. Only an F-gas certified engineer can fix and regas it.
- Hot water. The immersion or the cylinder's three-port valve, or the hot water schedule.
Before you book, see the checks you can make yourself and the error codes.
How to get a faster fix
- Note the error code and when it appears.
- Photograph the pressure gauge and the label on the outdoor unit (make and model).
- Say whether it's the heating, the hot water or both.
- Have the installation paperwork and the service history to hand: it decides the warranty.

Questions we get asked
How much does a heat pump repair cost in Ireland?
€140 to €400 for a fault call-out with a minor repair, parts extra. A refrigerant leak repair is €290 to €800.
Can a plumber repair a heat pump?
A plumber can fix the water side: pressure, valves, the pump and the cylinder. Anything on the refrigerant side needs an F-gas certified engineer.
Is my heat pump still under warranty?
Often, if it's been serviced every year and registered with the manufacturer. Check the paperwork before anyone opens the unit.
Why does my heat pump keep losing pressure?
A leak somewhere on the water side, a failed expansion vessel or a pressure relief valve that keeps opening. It needs finding, not just topping up.
